the sustainability story

The cards are printed on Mohawk Renewal Hemp paper. When it comes to sustainability, this paper ticks the boxes! Unlike trees, hemp grows rapidly, and can mature in as fast as 90 days. Turning it into pulp (the basis of paper!) requires less chemicals, less water, and less energy than traditional wood. The stalk of the plant, which otherwise would not be utilized, is repurposed to make the paper. Making paper with hemp also contributes to the growth of a sustainable paper supply chain. 30% of every Mohawk Renewal Hemp sheet of paper is made of hemp. The other 70% is responsibly sourced virgin pulp. Paper is not infinitely recyclable. Every time the fibers are recycled, they are shortened, and eventually become unusable. Ensuring that virgin paper is continuing to enter the greater stream responsibly is important to contribute to.

We chose to utilize the very old-school method of letterpress printing for each of the paper pieces (pen excluded). Letterpress is a particularly sustainable method as it uses a manual process or in some cases minimal electricity. The paper is hand-fed into the press and very little ink is required. We used “vintage” ink which was purchased from letterpress shops that were closing to prevent it from entering a waste stream. Letterpress ink can last for decades negating the need to purchase new ink. Each sheet of paper was set up to minimize waste and a good portion of the waste we did have was turned into the belly bands that are used to hold the cards together. For all of this we worked with the wonderful Denver letterpress shop, Genghis Kern - because keeping it local is another great way to be more sustainable.
