So we’ve been hearing a lot about AI lately. From ChatGPT to Sydney at Microsoft and a few days ago even Snapchat announced a ‘My AI’ feature. While all of this is exciting & new, it's also a little terrifying (AI Daily Podcast). We are at a tipping point that will affect a myriad of industries & applications. As curious creatives, this has been a topic of conversation in our team meetings and our Slack chats, so we decided to explore its possibilities. Naturally, we thought who better to look to than the robot itself…uh…themself?
Doing some research (watching a TikTok video), we figured out how to best write a prompt for ChatGPT to get the best result. Here is what we learned:
- Begin the prompt with an “I want you to act as…” statement
- Tell it what you will be providing “I will give you…”
- “You will…” this is where you give it the deliverables you are expecting
- Then give it your first request as it relates to step #2
Using the guidelines from above, here is the message we used that yielded the best results after some trial & error:
“I want you to act as a copywriter. I will give you a prompt and target audience. You will write a blog post to explain product benefits. My first request: "Prompt: Explain the benefits of ChatGPT for branding purposes. Target audience: Business owners aged 30-50"

There is certainly an aspect of efficiency and novelty to using ChatGPT. This bot cranked out the above in less than 2 minutes. But you'll notice it's never quite 100% the way YOU would write it, even when given edits and additional directions. Humans are still the experts in their relative fields at this stage. There is a level of nuance and that is where the human touch, through collaboration and iteration come through. The robot even agrees, “ChatGPT is designed to provide general information, assistance, and support in various areas. It is always important to exercise your own judgment and consult with professionals when necessary.” You also can lack authenticity when using this tool. If asked the same prompt it will likely answer the same way to the same prompt, which becomes repetitive and formulaic. There are also moral boundaries. Which is weird to think of a robot with morals. Unfortunately ChatGPT wouldn’t do a roast, although it did give advice on how to resolve any potential issues.
While this tool will certainly become more integrated into our daily routines as its capabilities will expand far beyond what we know right now, I would still take a look through everything the robot says before sending it out to your audiences. We will continue to test and learn the best ways to leverage AI as a resource to our team.
